Class advice. [Discussion] About to jump into GW2 and I'm looking for class advice. I'd like to be mostly melee focused. I'm a competent gamer, but wouldn't mind starting with an "easy" class to help my learning curve. Also, I'll probably focus on solo open world play until I really get a feel for things. 24.
Yes there is a best class. It is the class you have the most fun on! Try them all in different game modes because only you can choose. Careful though. You might become a multi class player.
It's definitely not as strong anymore, but it's still a fun and unique class to play. I'd also suggest Revenant but it has become a bit of a mess with some running around with 15 utility skills, 10 weapon skills and extra abilities on dodge.
As for Ranger as a starter class, the pet can make exploring the world on your first character pretty fun. Ranger also has one of the strongest downstates in the game, making it very forgiving if you die. I recommend it as a very good beginner class that is still top-tier once you reach endgame.
Cross-class utility is a lot less important. GladiusNocturno. Not really the most commonly used on all meta builds, but staff is the weapon available to most proffessions. The only proffessions that cant use it are warrior and Engineer. Symmol. Actually Sword is the most available weapon, only Necro can't use it.
There's a lot more that makes the two games fundamentally different. Mesmer in GW1 was about extreme punishment and debilitation. Mesmer in GW2 is more about trickery and standard magic flair. There are some punishment skills/traits here, but not to the extent of being the focus of the class (which it was in GW1) 2.
I went into Guild Wars 2 nearly 100% set on a Sylvari Necromancer. I'd get to keep the nature and life vibe I got from my night elf druid, and then also keep the demon summoning drain-tanker feel from my warlock. The transition wasn't smoothe, however. Guild Wars 2 minions have some mannerisms that make them less appealing to me.
If you want to try out some classes you can make a new charqcter and either: Enter the (structured) PvP lobby, this will temporarily make you level 80 with everything unlocked. Some skills are balanced different form PvE though. Use that level boost, it will let you try for a while, without requiring you to consume the boost until you want to
